Why I Started Bylo Built

When we started Bylo Acres Excavation & Grading, we weren't thinking about branding, SEO, websites, or marketing strategy.
We were thinking about how to get work, do good work, and hopefully build something sustainable over time.
Like a lot of small business owners in the trades, we quickly realized that customers were looking online before they ever called. They were checking Google reviews, scrolling Facebook pages, looking at websites, and trying to figure out who seemed legitimate and trustworthy.
At first, all of it felt pretty overwhelming.
Most of the marketing advice we found online either felt way too corporate or completely disconnected from the reality of running a blue-collar business. A lot of it sounded good, but not much of it felt practical for where we were at in our journey. Like many small businesses starting out, we didn’t have a huge marketing budget, so we focused on doing what we could afford at the time and slowly building from there.
So we just started learning as we went. Some things worked. Some didn’t.
At the time, Bylo Acres was still small. We started with a farm tractor and took on extra work where we could, slowly reinvesting back into the business as we grew. We didn’t have a polished brand or a professionally built online presence from day one. Most of it was built piece by piece over time through trial, error, consistency, and figuring things out as we went.
Over time, though, we started noticing that the small things really mattered:
Keeping information consistent
Posting real projects
Having a clean website
Making it easy for people to contact you
Showing up professionally online
Staying active and visible over time
None of it happened overnight, but little by little it started making a difference.
As Bylo Acres continued growing, we started having more conversations with other contractors and small business owners who were dealing with the same frustrations we had in the beginning. A lot of them were great at what they did, but they either didn’t know where to start online or were tired of sorting through generic marketing advice that didn’t really apply to their business.
That’s really where Bylo Built came from.
Not from some big business plan or agency idea. More from wanting to help other small businesses simplify things and build a stronger online presence without making it feel fake or overcomplicated.
I think there’s value in hearing from someone who’s actively building a business in the trades instead of someone just talking about it from the outside.
This blog will mostly be a place where I share things I’ve learned along the way — websites, branding, Google Business Profiles, social media, visibility online, and probably a few mistakes too.
Just real experiences, honest lessons, and practical things that may help other small business owners trying to grow.
